Our Story
The Founder
My name is Gregory (Mr. Greg) Rutledge, Jr., and I am the Founder of Atlanta Barber Institute, Inc. (ABI). I’m a Licensed Master Educator, Licensed Master Barber, (SMP) Scalp Micropigmentation, MicroBlading, and NanoBlading Specialist. Additionally, I actively study Trichology, Scar Camouflage and other entrepreneurial opportunities in the Barber Industry. Obsessed with forging my tonsorial skills, I share a traditional vision along with an innovative approach while applying effective mentorship.
I’m a father of four. My sons followed me into the trades. They own and operate Rutledge Maintenance Services (RMS) our family HVAC company. They were given management of RMS before 30 years of age. My focus shifted from the family business towards my passion, educating. I am helping those who want another option, including the 32.4% people of color (POC) who live in Atlanta, Georgia and surrounding areas.
Trades and working with your hands are still, even in 2021, portrayed as a less than desirable career path. When high schools prepare their “school report cards” they include college acceptance statistics, but often skilled apprenticeships and trade programs are excluded. I have facilitated educational instruction at both public & private institutions. My milestone achievement was implementing the barber curriculum at Gwinnett Technical College and private institutions.
I am well represented throughout the industry by all of the licensed professionals I’ve educated. They range from school owner, barber/beauty supply store owner and numerous other industry services. My celebrity clientele consists of platform licensed barbers & stylists who desire to be educators. I was previously on a team (Fadeologist, Inc.) that won Best Barbershop 2013 in the country. I’m also a military veteran and my tonsorial skills have been performed worldwide.
I designed a S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) & A.R. (Augmented Reality) infused barber school where we Revolutionize Education Through Innovation.
The ABI provides an alternative path for students in lieu of what most consider to be more traditional educational paths, such as four year institutions that can create mounting debt. ABI is becoming a well-known international institution, one of few, approved to virtually train students across the globe. COVID has proven that barbers are in great demand and are recession proof in their careers because currently no computer/robot can perform barber services.
Atlanta Barber Institute introduces “No Books, No Pens & No Paper.” This is an effort to support the students & the environment. It’s the ABI’s unique way of Going Green. The increasing adoption of tablets, mobile phones and mobile devices has spearheaded the demand for mobile learning, or “m-Learning / e-Learning” as the demand continues to rise. The traditional classroom setting has long passed. The days of a teacher, textbook and chalkboard have evolved. An instructor can now connect with remote students as if they were all in the same class setting. Also, barbering classes can now be conducted in a virtual environment to sharpen skills while fulfilling the state requirement for licensing.
